Caerphilly dog attack: Inquest into Jack Lis death opens
BBC News
A 10-year-old boy who was killed by a dog died as a result of "severe injuries to the head and neck" an inquest has heard.
Assuming this is an actual photo of the dog involved, called "Beast" (looks appropriate...), can anyone here hazard a guess as to the breed?

Re: Attack dog
Under the Dangerous Dogs Act, a pit bull terrier is defined by its measurements, and not by any other breed identification method such as pedigree or DNA.
"The High Court has decided that for a dog to be a pit bull type, it must have a substantial number or most of the physical characteristics of a pit bull terrier. These characteristics are listed in a number of places, and probably the most comprehensive (and that generally relied on by Courts) is the American Dog Breeders Association’s Basis of Conformation for the American Pit Bull Terrier.
This is a functional standard which describes the ideal, and so the dog does not have to conform in every detail to be regarded as a pit bull type."

Re: Attack dog
The American Pit Bull Terrier is a product of eugenics where the selected breed characteristics of the Bull Mastiff were crossed with the physical appearance of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier for the purpose of producing a fighting dog. In a court case , it was ruled that the American Pit Bull could be classified as a Staffordshire terrier on the basis of the body even though the concave snout of the cross breed is different from the convex snout of the Staffie . Since the ruling , several children have been attacked by Pit Bulls with the media , in their ignorance of genetics , reporting that the attacks were by Staffies.

Re: Attack dog
...Yes. That's all very well. However I remember the last place I worked somebody owned a (Staffordshire?) Bull Terrier. "Don't bend down too quickly with your face near to it." was the advice. Once, at their house I forgot and stooped down to pet the "nice doggy"... I still remember the yawning maw of teeth heading upwards towards me. Fortunately I was still just young enough, fit enough and quick enough to reverse and out-accelerate the ascending man trap, or I might have lost my face.
