Cooked Gammon Joint
We always struggle to find shops that sell cooked gammon joints......non of the supermarkets we use seem to have them Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury. Does anyone know why that might be ?

Re: Cooked Gammon Joint
Maybe because most customers buy the joint uncooked and cook it themselves , in a saucepan covered with water and brought to a boil and then simmered for 25 mins per pound ( or 55 mins per kilo ).

This. Dead easy. I cooked one last week as it happens.
I prepped pre boil by cutting the skin off but leaving a layer of fat which i scored diamond style. Then i baked it having brushed the fat layer with german mustard (aka senf, but wholegrain works too) and dusted it with paprika (personal choices here ).
The rind I had cut off I also diamond scored and baked in the oven as well, for home made scratchings/crackling.
The water I boiled the ham in is awaiting to be made into a soup of some decsripon, probably with lentils and some left over ham possibly.

Re: Cooked Gammon Joint
Yes our cook can do that, she knows how to cook it, she's done it many times when she hasnt been able to source a pre cooked gammon joint. But we would prefer to pay extra for a pre cooked one. It's been impossible to find any cooked one's on sale anywhere.......but of course she hasnt looked everywhere.

Have a word with your local deli - they ought to give you a decent discount from the sliced price if you are taking a whole one.

Re: Cooked Gammon Joint
I agree its nice getting it precooked and with lovely breadcrumbs..
BUT
its even easier doing it in a slow cooker.....add half a tin of pineapple chunks/slices...or infact any tinned fruit you have at the back of the cupboard
(needs to be in fruit juice as opposed to syrup)
pop it in and leave it 4 or 5 hours...job done, and no mess wih only one pot to wash

Re: Cooked Gammon Joint
I happened to catch one of the Aldi Christmas adverts last night, and the laden dinner table on it features a large cooked ham.
Whether they sell them like that I don't know, but they might.
Scott.

Re: Cooked Gammon Joint
Do you have a local butcher? Ours sells gammon and other things better than in most supermarkets (no added water for one). As they sell their own home cured ham by the slice, I'm pretty sure they'd sell me cooked gammon of I asked them.

Re: Cooked Gammon Joint
How big a joint? (That sounds funny)
The big supermarkets usually have a bunch of stuff you can get at xmas only.
Mum likes gammon so we've had honey glazed pre done ones from Tesco and Morrisons.
This brand says it's available at Morrisons though I've not tried it

A quick google says M&S are doing a cola one! I've never tried it but it seems a bit odd.

Cola's been my mum's staple for slow cooking big joints for years: it's basically caramel flavouring, sugar and E-numbers
Brisket I'll normally do in a slow cook with a bottle of stout, carrots, onion and celery
- ginger beer sounds like an interesting change

well I dont....keep the fruit juice handy in case you feel it looking dry..but I doubt it will
slow cookers dont usually use or need much moisture
all cooks 'within itself'
as others have said...cola is good as well but our choice is fruit juice

This is one of the things it takes a "go yourself" to realise with slow cookers
I reckon I'll normally aim for "a cup" (200-250ml) of liquid covering the base of our 8litre cooker (couple of mm deep)for a slow roast
- it needs a bit of moisture to help the heat transfer and then the wonderful rendering starts!
You can use more on a big bit of meat - or if you want a stew
- but as long as there's just enough to get really steamy after half an hour (on high) it will cook well and efficiently

Re: Cooked Gammon Joint
Derailing slightly I get confused between ham and gammon, I thought the gammon was the cut, a rear leg but cured and raw, ham the same cut cured and then cooked but you can get uncooked hams like prosciutto crudo.
I've done pork shoulder with a tin of pineapple chuncks in juice, tried fruit cocktail when I was out of pineapple, I'd make sure it's in juice as I think syrup might be a bit too much. I have also done pork in cola a few times and recently tried cherry cola.
Definitely beer for beef and red wine for lamb.
and to try to answer the question M&S and Morrisons do christmas food to order including whole cooked gammons/hams M&S seem to have sold out of a lot of lines. https://christmasfood.marksandspencer.c ... rger_mains

I believe the confusion in English is because the "ham" can refer to the part of the body as well as the meat
For meat: "ham" doesn't need cooked... "gammon" does
But for the bit of the body of the pig (I'm assuming) you could have "ham", "gammon", prosciutto, salami, sausages, etc which might include the word HAM in the name

Re: Cooked Gammon Joint
I prefer to roast a gammon for the intensity of the flavour, however, this might suit your needs

I have used Meatbox once and the product was good.

I'm going off topic because one of my biggest regrets presently is not snagging one of these https://reverb.com/au/p/dod-meatbox-reissue when they were generally available (yes, yes this is a "one that got away" post... apologies)
I'll live, I know... but they're just bloody excellent at what they do
I did however pick up a "gonkulator" while I could.. so not all is lost
(though the decision by Samsung to dispense with Dod/Digitech when they bought Harman for the car speaker tech was in no short measure f**"""ing ridiculous)
As you were
Peace
