My experience leads me to believe that no existing tooth brush cleans teeth properly.
Many dentists in my area discovered some time ago that they are no longer able to clean and polish teeth as part of a regular visit. It seemed to coincide with the appointment of a dental hygienist.
Everybody I know leaves the dentist having been advised to make an appointment with the hygienist to "get the teeth cleaned properly". Many have been told that they "need" to do this 2,3or 4 times a year.
My recent visit cost me £95 for 45 minutes.

You should really do both i.e. use an electric toothbrush AND get 2-4 professional cleanings a year. Because no matter how well you brush, you cannot get to all parts.

I also floss and use a variety of hand-held cleaning aids daily to get into awkward and difficult areas.

The reason you go to the hygienist is to remove tartar or calculus which is a hard deposit formed when your tooth brushing routine is not adequate. Once these deposits are formed then no amount of brushing at home will remove them so the hygienist has to scrape them off with a hand scraper or using an ultrasonic tool.

It is possible if your teeth are spaced well enough to clean your teeth well enough at home to avoid tartar but most either can't or don't. Electric toothbrushes can help.

Yes, despite assiduous brushing the six-monthly hygienist still finds things to scrape.

Yesterday, following an injudicious interaction with a crusty loaf, I had a bridge reglued.... £224.

The cost of an electric brush is piddling compared to the dental work it potentially obviates.

Hi Folks,
Just an update. Went for the Oral B Pro 1, £30. All seems fine. Thanks for the advice.
Ray.

It's all well and good eulogizing about Oral B toothbrushes, but don't forget Panasonic bread-makers - the quintessential recommendation for consumer products.

So many images...

May I suggest reading the manual before experimenting like that? I'm sure there'll be a safety warning or something ;)

Gums! Don't forget your gums! Electric toothbrushes are great for massaging them.

One of my friends was a Royal Navy hygienist. Visiting her on base, I noticed a huge jar of perfect white teeth in her surgery. (What on earth?!) One of her duties was to ensure sailors were dentally fit before going to sea. Most of those shining knashers had been removed from young ratings who'd neglected to brush their gums and lost teeth to gum disease, and she used it to try and educate them as to the perils of not looking after the whole mouth.

Floss is good, but unwaxed tape can be better:

These are good for the times when wrapping floss or tape round your fingers isn't convenient or appropriate.

Aw, this goes back to the TMF days, when every few months discussion would turn to the wonders of Panasonic bread-makers, compared with other types.
[Warning: upcoming pun!]
People used to get very protective of their favourite make, and tempers would rise and cool in defence of their Panasonics.
[OK, pun over.]
I just had visions of new battles, this time about Oral B vs. Braun etc.
