Installing EV Chargepoints

#635715

Postby Rhyd6 » December 22nd, 2023, 10:38 am

Anyone any idea what the cost of having an EV chargepoint installed is? Apparently if you're a homeowner there are no grants available to do this but if you rent a house or flat there is.

Just asking. Are there different rules in Wales?

I've never had it done, but know enough to say that the cost can vary hugely.

It could be as cheap and simple as installing a plug socket, or as expensive as trenching and replacing the cables going into your house.
It's very dependent upon how fast you want to be able to charge and how modern the mains supply is.

£999 for mine via energy supplier (Octopus). Straight forward install, house supply fused at 100A. This included the "Ohme Home Pro" wallbox and 8m tethered charging cable.

Or if you own a flat - the rules are here, up to 75% and no more than £350 of grant :

So the cost of installing one is around £1k. Around 5000 miles of petrol motoring at 40mpg? Plus EVs are very expensive to buy.
I believe the cost of the electricity to charge the car not cheap anymore, so how is this all making economic sense, yet?

Um.... the point of electric cars is not to save money - but to save the planet.

It cost £744 to install our 7kWh charger.

We lease a KIA BEV for slightly less per month than our previous 1.4 petrol Golf so it is actually cheaper to run before considering fuel costs.

I also have a petrol car which averages just over 40 mpg. Fuel cost for 1,000 miles for this is currently around £165. The cost of electricity for our BEV per 1,000 miles, at 9p per kWh Octopus overnight rate, is around £24.

So after around 5,300 miles the lower BEV running cost paid for the charger. (It was probably better than this because petrol was more expensive than it is currently and we paid less for electricity (7.5p per kWh) for most of the time we have had the BEV.)

To be realistic, the environmental benefit of a BEV is that it doesn't emit fumes which is a major advantage in cities. I'm not sure that there is an environmental advantage when the car is scrapped at the end of its life vs an ICE car?

We live in the country and I occasionally visit our local city and am very aware of the air pollution from car exhausts. Hopefully this is reducing as more cars become electric.

It does if you lease a new car and were going to do that anyway, especially if it is a business lease as most new car purchases are, but the mixture of incentives to get the technology established have dried up and the nearly tripling of electricity prices have removed much of the advantage. Also the tax breaks like VED are being eroded,

But since when has buying a new car ever made economic sense?

I admit that this is a bit nerdy, and as this is an investment site, I accept the electric car wasn't acquired to save money, however our BEV has actually saved more than I posted above because it is a second car and used mainly for short journeys, for example shopping at our local Tesco. In fact, I'd guess that its average journey is around five miles with the occasional much longer drive.

Making these short trips in an ICE car like the previous Golf meant that the fuel consumption was 30 mpg or lower so the fuel cost would be considerably higher and the payback on the charger much quicker. Also with a cold engine, the pollution much higher.

My previous ICE car was a 5 Series petrol BMW which returned better than 40 mpg over five years because, it wasn't used for short journeys as a rule, it was mainly used for motorway cruising. Apart from those annoying trips to the petrol station to refuel ;) .

Presumably we will start seeing good deals on 2nd hand BEVs as leases/PCP deals come to an end and cars are handed back for a new replacement. Could be a good way to get a BEV with most of the depreciation paid by someone else.
