PSON up 6% yesterday and 14% today, taking it to my weight limit.

Nothing obvious in the press, but something is a foot, apart from 12 inches.

Could be a candidate for trimming if the rise continues.

Crikey, I'm actually back in capital profit on PSON! Question is, should I sell before the Reddit crowd move on, or will they be hanging around for a while longer? :?

Recovery, following a spell unloved and undervalued when the market overreacted to troubles.

Apart from that, their considerable investment over many years in delivering education online could be coming into its own!

Do you have any proof of that? Why at this time?

I bought initially in October 2009 at 832p, added in April 2014 at 1090p, in September 2015 at 1101p, then in November 2015 at 757p when the price had a sudden fall. I bought more in September 2016 at 737p and again in June 2020 at 505p, followed in July 2020 at 543p.

The dividend fell from 52p to 17p in 2017 and has been rising gently since then.

I can see myself watching the price tomorrow morning.

Well apart from something like a takeover bid, there’s never any “proof” of why a particular share went up in price on a particular day. But given the market chatter and media comment, it seems highly likely to me that the reason I give is on the money.

No reason why now, Pearson has been heavily shorted for a long time. Market participants are coming to understand the potential risks of these retail investors acting en masse to squeeze out shorts.

I must confess to selling at around 825p... it might of course spike further up, but having last bought at ~580 last year, I couldn't resist. I still like the company's prospects and would buy back at around 600, but at the current valuation I'm out.

It has retrenched today, so the pressure would appear to be off. Still needs watching, though.

Pearson 2021 Q1 Trading Update

Highlights

· Encouraging start to the year despite challenging market conditions, with underlying revenue growth of 5% reflecting good progress as we reposition Pearson for sustainable growth with a strong direct to consumer focus.

· Global Online Learning up 25%, with strong growth in Virtual Schools due to enrolment growth in the current school year in Partner Schools as well as in US district partnerships; modest growth in OPM due to ongoing impact of discontinued programs.

· Global Assessment down 2%, as strong recovery in Professional Certification and US Clinical Assessment was more than offset by U S School Assessment, where revenue was down significantly due to the challenging comparative and reuse of material from cancelled exams.

· North American Courseware up 1% as Canada benefited from the continued sales shift to digital and a school funding increase which more than offset a 1% decline in US Higher Education Courseware. We continued to see good momentum in the US business with growth in total units sold into colleges, growth in digital sales and registrations, and returns continuing to trend lower. Growth in eBooks more than offset declines in print and bundle units, showing signs of secondary market recapture.

· I nternational down 2% with a decline in English as COVID-19 continued to impact our courseware and franchise business in Latin America, notwithstanding slight improvement in Pearson Test of English volume and courseware recovery in China. BTEC revenue was lower due to FE College closures and lower resit fees due to 2020 exam cancellations. This was partially negated by strong courseware sales in Europe and South Africa.

· We continue to expect our performance to be in line with our 2021 outlook, as outlined on 8 March 2021 at our full year results.

Interim results for the six months to 30th June 2021

Highlights

Underlying revenue up 17% to £1,597m

· Global Online Learning up 25% driven by strong growth in US Virtual Schools; modest growth in OPM with good underlying growth offset by discontinued programs.

· Global Assessment grew 34% with growth across all divisions, following the closure of test centres and schools and exam cancellations in 2020.

· North American Courseware up 2%, driven by a recovery in Canada which more than offset a 2% decline in US Higher Education Courseware.

· International grew 8% with growth in courseware, clinical assessment and PTE following school, bookstore and test centre closures last year.

Adjusted operating profit of £127m, following loss of £(23)m in H1 2020

· Recovery with operating leverage from trading, cost savings, and favourable timing partially offset by inflation and FX.

· Adjusted EPS 10.5p (H1 2020: loss of (5.1)p).

· Net interest payable of £27m (H1 2020: £27m). Interest on borrowings increased slightly, offset by favourable timing and a one-off gain following the close out of interest rate swaps.

Strong balance sheet and cash flow with H1 net debt of £646m (H1 2020: £982m)

· Interim dividend of 6.3p declared (H1 2020: 6.0p), an increase of 5%.

· Available liquidity of approximately £1.4bn at the end of the period.

And later;

The directors are declaring an interim dividend of 6.3p per equity share, payable on 20 September 2021 to shareholders on the register at the close of business on 13 August 2021. This interim dividend, which will absorb an estimated £48m of shareholders' funds, has not been included as a liability as at 30 June 2021.

Well, at least they are trying. This is one I should have sold off when I had the chance, probably, but now it's hunker down for the long haul. But I'm never far from thinking of ditching it, TBH.
At least I'm in the black as regards TR, so I could sell and keep my shirt.

Nine Month Trading Update

Good strategic progress, full year outlook unchanged. Strong performance in Assessment & Qualifications helps offset declining enrolments in Higher Education

Group underlying revenue up 10% for the nine months

· Virtual Learning revenue grew 14% reflecting strong enrolment growth in Virtual Schools in the 2020/21 school year and flat revenue in Online Program Management with underlying growth offset by discontinued programs

· Higher Education revenue was down 7% as growth in international courseware was offset by a decline in US Higher Education Courseware

· English Language Learning revenue grew 15% with strong growth in Pearson Test of English (PTE) and courseware following test centre and school closures in 2020

· Workforce Skills revenue grew 5% due mainly to growth in GED and Talent Lens following COVID-19 impacts in 2020

· Assessment & Qualifications revenue grew 24% with a strong performance across Pearson VUE, School Assessment and Clinical Assessment

· Revenue in businesses held under Strategic Review grew 7% driven by a COVID-19 recovery in courseware and a phasing benefit in school purchases in South Africa in Q3 2021

So why did they fall so much today? Nothing in that to frighten the horses.

"A jump in Covid-19 infections over the summer prompted American school-leavers to delay enrolling in colleges, hitting sales at Pearson and sparking a share price fall yesterday that wiped 15 per cent off the education publisher’s market value.

In a trading update, the London-listed Pearson reported a 9 per cent drop in third-level courseware revenues in the United States in the first nine months of the year after a decline in enrolments."

( I don't have a subscription to The Times but there's enough info which might provide an explanation).

That fall was in the RNS but it didn't strike as worth a 14% reduction in share price.

Trading Statement

Andy Bird, Chief Executive said:

"We made great progress in Q4 and are delivering a strong full year performance, with sales growth and profit exceeding our original guidance. Led by a strong management team, we are repositioning the business, driving digital innovation and an increased focus on the consumer through the launch of Pearson+. We are well placed to build on this momentum in the year ahead and look to the future with confidence."

Full year Group sales up 8% and adjusted operating profit expected of c.£385m up c.33% compared to last year and ahead of expectations*, at an average USD:GBP exchange rate of 1.38.

· Strong performance in Assessment & Qualifications

- Sales in Assessment & Qualifications, our largest business, were up 18% driven by the strength of Professional Certification (VUE), Clinical Assessment and US Student Assessment, following a recovery from COVID-19.

- VUE test volumes grew 30% to 16.8m due to this recovery, new client launches and growth in existing programs. Volumes in OnVUE**, Pearson's online proctoring service, grew 46% reflecting continuing demand for remote testing.

- In Q4, sales were up 2% as growth in US Student Assessment was partially offset by expected declines in VUE, due to strong comparators from a COVID-19 catch up in Q4 2020.
