Time for Money

Spending capital even just the once might be nice, the ideal being having spent the last £1 just prior to passing.

That's very true. Our last cruise was in August 2019, Norway and Iceland home via Dublin and Guernsey. The one we had booked in 2020 down the Seine was cancelled as they couldn't raise a quorum.

I have missed countless club meetings, old school and college reunions, and of course the meals out that could not be eaten.

I hope that my faith in Boris letting us free on 21st June is justified. There is a lot of catching up to do.

I'm still dreading a possible repeat of the Spanish Flu WW1 era, that killed twice as many that died in the war. First two years much the same as of present, similar death rates etc., but that evolved/mutated and hit with a vengeance, highly contagious, highly deadly (30%+ contracting it died). The saviour was it being so deadly, catch it in the morning, dead by the evening, which was its undoing such that after 4 years in total it had more or less passed. Australia was the only continent to avoid it, via quarantine practices, ships had to dock offshore and quarantine for days before being permitted to dock/load/unload.

I never anticipated in the run up to retirement that the first year(s) of retirement breaks would be so restricted

How successful was the vaccination programme for Spanish flu?
Did they have mRNA technology that can be relatively quickly altered?
I am more positive.

I do hope you're right and that we're not in a ground-hog lock-down whilst waiting for 7+ billion global population to each receive the latest variant vaccine for years to come.

This is how I feel
I'm mid 50s currently and there are two future milestones I'm keeping an eye on
Retirement, and my joining the 'Choirs Celestial'
The first will be in the next two years all being well, and the second a long way off...I hope
I'm becoming increasingly aware of the limited number of years left, and having a year (to date) stolen is somewhat depressing.
All the things I enjoy doing - going home to stay with my mum, nights out down the pub with friends, music festivals, gigs -all gone
I missed several family funerals, and spent Christmas on my own. I was logged in working on Christmas eve...
OK , sounds like whinging, and I appreciate a lot of people have had it worse than me - all the significant birthdays, weddings, funerals missed. People with a life limiting illness and a 'bucket list'.. and of course the people lost to the virus itself and their families.

On the plus side - when (not if) another pandemic comes along we will have a much better idea of how to deal with it- there has been a lot of rapid development in the vaccine area, and the logistics of delivering jabs to arms has been tried out.
The key point is - let the specialists get on with it - NHS/Army for delivery and an apolitical specialist team to order vaccines/monitor/genetic sequence etc
Keep the politicians as far away as possible from the important stuff...

This is a very confusing thread. For a start, well it starts in the middle of an exchange it would seem. Secondly, the heading keeps alternating. What is it all about?

The vaccines may save many in western countries but there is still a huge risk that China/Far east could have a huge death toll and that would have a massive impact on western lifestyles that are dependent on imports for everything from t-shirts to iPhones.

Sorry Dod, my fault. I split this thread off a topic within "How to Invest" because it really had gone off topic and was of no help to the OP. As I did it I renamed the thread. Unfortunately people were replying to posts as I was doing this, which resulted in their eventual replies assuming the original subject.

I'll report this and request the subjects be unified. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Watching Dr Phil Hammond on Countdown the other day, he asked how old do you have to be to have less than 50% chance of getting to your next birthday? The answer was 104! I had assumed the low 90s, but all guesses were wide of the mark.

I guess that the answer is never to assume the worst, unless it has already happened.
