Microsoft has blacklisted Brit hosting outfit TSO Host's bulk email domain, meaning anyone trying to send large quantities of mail over its infrastructure cannot deliver it to an Outlook or Hotmail address.

Irate resellers got in touch with The Reg to complain that their own customers were moaning that emails sent to any Microsoft domain were bouncing.

Interesting. I send very few emails to Hotmail accounts, but several have been giving me that bounce message recently. Not all of them, by any means, and I find I can get round the block by sending via a third party webmail site. Bit of a faff, though.

My reseller uses Heart Internet, based in Nottingham, which claims to be "the 2nd largest web-host in the UK for websites hosted". I feel a conversation with my reseller coming on....

Thanks!

I have had it with a few legitimate emails via legitimate bulk emailers over the past few months.
One was from my main bank (via a third party bulk emailer) which I had to put into the address book eventually (basic 'trust this sender' whitelisting wasn't enough) to stop it being spam foldered every time.

It's the flipside of cutting down on spam/spoofing et al.
Set the SPF/DKIM/DMARC bar *too high and everyone starts complaining about bounce backs or being spam foldered continuously...

*Entirely subjective of course. I don't mind, I routinely check my spam folders across all my accounts several times a day anyway and run my Inboxes 'exclusive' where possible.

From bad to worse it seems...https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/08/2 ... il_issues/
Updated
Customers of Brit hosting outfit TSO Host are suffering from a cluster of issues leaving them without email services for a prolonged period or a clear idea when they'll get them back.

No one using TSO Host been able to send emails to Microsoft Hotmail or Outlook addresses since the end of July. The company blamed having its IP addresses blacklisted.

Cloud mail services have also been borked for more than a week, according to its status page. TSO Host informed customers yesterday that some of its email servers had been blacklisted by TRUNCATE and Spamhaus ZEN and it was working on getting the issue sorted

I've noticed Spamhaus ZEN are very keen to blacklist, pretty much every WAN IP I check has a listing, including the EE one I'm posting from (not on any other blacklists)...

Spamhaus ZEN lists amongst other things dynamic IP addresses ie those commonly assigned to home users by ISPs since such dynamic addresses are often used to send spam via bots etc. To get around this home users should send the email out via the ISP's central mailhub.

These blocked dynamic address ranges are listed in the ZEN sub-list known as the PBL

https://www.spamhaus.org/zen/

ZEN is the combination of all Spamhaus IP-based DNSBLs into one single powerful and comprehensive blocklist to make querying faster and simpler. It contains the SBL, SBLCSS, XBL and PBL blocklists.

https://www.spamhaus.org/pbl/

https://mxtoolbox.com/problem/blacklist/spamhaus-zen

PBL - Spamhaus PBL is a DNSBL database of end-user IP address ranges which should not be delivering unauthenticated SMTP email to any Internet mail server except those provided for specifically by an ISP for that customer's use.

Spamhaus Zen Reports Dynamic Ip Addresses

Dynamic-based Blacklists will list many DHCP ranges of IP Addresses from Internet Service Providers. You could be listed if your IP Address was previously dynamically assigned, or if your ISP gave you a static assignment and did not assign a distinguished PTR-Record, aka a "Reverse DNS Entry."

In my case my main ISP is Three (I have an unlimited tethering deal) who have a habit of assigning dirty CGN NAT IPv4 addresses continually and doing nothing to clean them up (that I can surmise).
Pretty much every WAN side address I've got in the last year or so from them is on multiple blacklists (not just Spamhaus ZEN).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier-grade_NAT
In cases of banning traffic based on IP addresses, the system might block the traffic of a spamming user by banning the user's IP address. If that user happens to be behind carrier-grade NAT, other users sharing the same public address with the spammer will be mistakenly blocked.[6] This can create serious problems for forum and wiki administrators attempting to address disruptive actions from a single user sharing an IP address with legitimate users.

I've had issues logging into my online banking due to blacklists, resolved via switching the phone off and on to get a less 'dirty' WAN IP address.
Cloudflare issues with website access are a common complaint online.

I've used MXTools for a while for many checks, I've had my domain real time monitored on there for the last six months or so via a free account.

Email isn't as much an issue for me as I'm using SMTP from the big boys MS/Google et al, who do keep their house in order on the blacklist/spam/configuration front.

Email redundancy.

The Yahoo outage has prompted me as someone mentioned they use Gmailify to back up their Yahoo account.

I've been doing this for a few years now across several webmail accounts from different providers, mostly using Gmail to do various POP3/Gmailify (quasi IMAP) backup syncs. (POP3 with mail left on the server acts as a good inbox 'archive' as long as you give the POP3 polling long enough. Normally hourly.)
Gmail has a good system of filtering and label titling / colour coding, so multiple accounts feeding into one Gmail account is quite manageable with a bit of prep.

A further tweak for email is if you set up 'aliases' for critical accounts, say a business/personal domain. That way if your domain providers infrastructure / SMTP is down you can still send email that look like they have come from your domain account (unless you analyse the source headers, which gives the game away).
For my domain I have both a Gmail and Outlook.com alias, the Gmail is a legacy as I don't think you can do aliasing on the free accounts anymore (but can in G Suite, the paid option).

Outlook.com still lets you have up to 10 aliases and will let you use their SMTP to send (a rarity these days because of the spam issues).
You have to set them up from your Microsoft account now though, they removed it from the webmail settings (again probably to deter spammers).
You can also set up an email alias as the default email address on the MS account and change the MS account titling to match if needed, I did this recently for an account I run my mothers EPA affairs on. Handy.

Mobile apps. will quite often work when the main webmail access is down, I had no issues with Yahoo this morning via the Android app. but couldn't log in via webmail. (This is often true for banking as well, the Natwest outage the other week didn't affect my mobile app. access thankfully as I had several transfers to do.)

Emails normally stay in your email program, but occasionally you might need to keep a copy as an offline backup. Here’s how to save an email to your hard drive so it’s always available and accessible.

I've noticed the spam volume on my oldest Outlook.com (hotmail) address has reduced significantly in the last week or so, so hopefully they are getting on top of it a bit more via ML.

Also issues with legitimate senders being bounced (see the top of the thread) seems to have been resolved lately (for me anyway, although that was to a different Outlook.com address).

https://protonmail.com/blog/dkim-key-management/

It is now harder for hackers and spammers to impersonate ProtonMail users that have custom domain email addresses. We have introduced the DKIM key management in beta, which allows you to manually rotate your DKIM keys. This is part of our continuing effort to make it more difficult for attackers to impersonate our users’ custom domains.

Just a bit of a heads up that there are quite a few genuine C19 related emails from service providers/utilities et al that are appearing in my spam/junk folders as they are either being sent from new unique addresses or via legitimate third party bulk emailers, which aren't currently whitelisted (and/or are failing some part of the DMARC authentication process due to their newness).

So if you don't routinely check your junk folders, now might be a good time to start.
