Nokia 5.3?

#323987

Postby GeoffF100 » July 6th, 2020, 8:10 am

The battery in my venerable Moto X Play seems to be dying. Down to 63% after one day, and I have not been using it. It does not look difficult to replace the battery. There are plenty of YouTube videos for that. Genuine Motorola batteries do not appear to be available. It costs about £20 for an unbranded battery on eBay. I would also need a special micro screwdriver too. I do not think it is worth it though. I am am sure that I can find someone willing to take the phone off my hands.

A shining new phone looks like an attractive option. I really should have one with security updates. Android One appears to be my best option. Vanilla Android with security updates directly from Google for 3 years. The Nokia 5.3 looks like a good bet at £149.95 from Argos. Much more RAM and storage. The processor looks much faster too:

Any experience?

Missus has an earlier model 5.1 (though it's hard to work out the sequence with Nokia!)
Exceptional build quality!
There's one weirdness where hangout notifications don't seem to always sound - which is frustrating: https://community.phones.nokia.com/disc ... 019-update

If it works for you it's an excellent phone

Looks ok but not exceptional as a cheap phone, but it appears to not have a compass sensor which would be a deal breaker for me.

I have bought one. I have not had much time to play with it, but I have switched the SIM from the old phone and done some essential tasks on the new phone. It seems to be snappier than the old phone, which is what I would expect (or at least hope for) from the hardware spec. Android 10 gave me trouble. The back arrow and hope button were gone. Thankfully, there is a solution:

Google was also bothering me with offers to enable various features while I was trying to get some urgent work done. Enabling chat features was one of them:

I do not know how that squares with my 2p per text with 3 Mobile.

Still no complaints about the hardware. Android 10 is still giving me trouble. I wanted to delete an app icon from my home screen. Google says that I just have to drag it off the screen, but that did not work. It just bounced back. I pressed the icon and moved it down a little and buttons appeared for "remove" and "uninstall", but when I lifted my finger they disappeared. I tried holding the icon down with one finger, and tapping the remove button with another, but that did not work. I finally hit on the idea of holding the icon down with one finger while hovering another finger just above the remove button. I then hit the remove button at the same time that I released the icon, or perhaps a few milliseconds later. That worked.

Don't you just drag the icon to the "uninstall" button and let go? (I don't have Android 10).

Scott.

I have got 10 and that is exactly what you do, either over the X to remove the screen icon or uninstall (which should turn it red).

Thank you both very much. I expect it was like that previously too. I have to say that it was not obvious. These devices seem to be getting less intuitive, despite the screens getting bigger.

I jumped from Android 6.0.1 to 9 (for only a couple of days) and then 10, it took me quite a while to get comfortable with 10.
It does have quirks which don't necessarily seem to be improvements over what went before! There's a fair bit more granularity in 10's settings, it's worth drilling down into them to see what all the options are.

I think that my main problem here is that I set my old phone up four years ago and have not changed the home screen for ages. I accidentally moved one icon over another on the old (now Android 7) phone and got two icons in a folder. The intuitive double clicking opened the top application. Despite a vague memory of being caught out like that before, I was tearing my hair out. A quick tap does it. I have to say that I think user interfaces peaked at around the time of Windows XP and went downhill steadily after smartphones arrived. OK, that was about the last time I designed a user interface, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I have all my icons in folders. Single page home screen, with about 14 folders, containing absolutely all my apps. No other screens, no app drawer, everything there in folders with sensible names (Media, Tools, Mapping, Social, Travel etc.)

Keeps it nice and simple.

I do not use many apps, so getting them on one screen is not a problem.

There is definitely a learning curve to Android 10. The phone has just been pinging me for no apparent reason. No new notifications on the lock screen. Just the ones I was ignoring. When I actioned those out of frustration, I found Google Assistant notifications offering to make my life more complicated by enabling power user features. I should probably right swipe notifications that are not a priority for me. Perhaps I should turn Google Assistant off. Does it do anything useful?

The screen kept fading before I had a chance to read it, but I think I have fixed that.

You need to spend some time going through the global settings (gear wheel) and then drilling down through all the sub menus and options to turn off (mostly) and on (much less) what alerts you want, specific vibrate/sounds per alert et al. There's a lot there. If you get stuck a quick specific google will normally yield the procedure.

For instance I have quite a few email addresses, so I have vibrate alert on for all of them but different sounds per address, so I know which address has triggered without looking at the screen. That way I prioritise only looking at my business email immediately, everything else can wait until it's convenient.
Likewise for messaging apps.

On my Pixel 3a there's a handy feature that lets you put it face down to put it into do not disturb mode, with customised allow lists.
Unfortunately I discovered it was triggering itself at all sort of inopportune moments and I was missing important phone calls, so now it's switched off and I do DND from the quick swipe down menu option (which is also customisable, I have a fair bit on there).
The assistants, transcribe apps et al also have a tendency to trigger when you don't need them so again turning them off or reducing their trigger sensitivity where possible helps. Squeezing the phone case has a threshold trigger setting on my Pixel 3a, so I've set that as high as I can to try and minimise false app. triggers.

As an aside I've just picked up a Nokia 105 from PC World, £20. 900/1800 dual band GSM only, no 3/4G, bluetooth, WiFi or anything else remotely modern, even down to the SIM slot which is mini, so my old SIM card slipped straight in.
Exactly the same OS settings layout as my ancient (but kaput) Nokia 3120, albeit with a colour screen.
Just finished setting it up, 10 minutes... :D

(Currently on a Vodafone SIM only contract, but I think I'm going to stick a roaming UK MVNO SIM (all four networks) in it on a minimal deal, as its main purpose is for the hills where signal is hard to come by on the 3 SIM smartphone.)

I am using 3 Mobile. Very poor coverage away from big towns. No 2G network. 1p Mobile looks interesting. It piggy backs on EE which has the best coverage. Minimum annual spend is 4 x £10, which is more than I am paying at the moment. Emergency calls can be made over any network, otherwise I would go to 1p Mobile like a shot. Perhaps I should do so anyway. My Nokia 5.3 is dual SIM, by the way.

Just looking at the 1p Mobile site now, does look interesting as EE would be my 1st choice.

No you don't. I made a mistake in my previous post. You have to do a £10 top at least up once every 4 months, not 3, so the minimum annual cost is £30. That is more than I am paying 3 Mobile, but it is hardly a King's ransom. 1p Mobile is definitely interesting.
