You forgot to mention that Bess has the same batting average as bowling average: 55.5. Isn't he in the team as a bowler?

Broad's batting average is three times his bowling average. A record?

Bess's batting avereage is hugely boosted by the fact he was not out mostly.

Woakes - seems to thruive on batting at #7. His performances batting at #8 dont come near eally. is that just because he runs out of batting partners while at #7 he can get played in better? interesting. He'll need to drop to #8 presumably when Stokes returns, unless Pope gets dropped and Buttler bats #6. The irony may be that Woakes makes way for Stokes...

Great though soem of those stats are its a little concerning that of the top six order batsmen, three of them averaged less than "lower order" batsmen - notwithstanding Bess' somewhat warped figure. And granted they all three of them scored more runs than the lower order counterparts overall.

It seems to me that if Root, in the field, wants something to happen, he will call on Anderson, Broad or Archer, rarely Woakes. Bess's batting and bowling averages being precisely equal is a remarkable statistical quirk.

Burns' and Root's batting disappointing. Good to see Broad has regained his confidence with the bat. Crawley's double ton was perfection. He oozes class. Now if Buttler can up his game behind the sticks.....

I thought Archer had little luck in the last test. Can't wait to see him on a fast track. Anderson (remarkable achievement) and Broad in particular had a blinder.

Overall a good performance from a useful English squad. Not many teams can boast 2 all rounders the quality of Stokes and Woakes.

I suppose Anderson has to go to Australia(if it goes ahead) but he is nowhere near as effective in those conditions.

He's obviously an all-rounder, though a convergence around 30.00 might be a more typical standard!

Or can be selected as a batsman in his own right and foakes (for example) takes the gloves. though that would mean standing somebody else down and presumably in the middle order. Which currently would mean Pope presumably.

Would Root's batting improve if he stepped down from the captaincy and Stokes took over?

one way of finding out.

We may also find out that the captaincy then affects Stokes' play of course.

Could make Stokes even better, if that's possible. Both Stokes and Root improve. Or both their performances suffer. Hmmm.

I have always been an advocate of playing your best gloveman but I think the ECB's golden boy (Buttler) has bought himself another couple of tours.

As suggested above, I wouldn't mind seeing Buttler as a specialist batsman.

In the long run I only see one of the two openers keeping their positions. Let Crawley open, push Pope to three and slot Ben Foakes in.
