My iMac periodically restarts itself

#343839

Postby Leither » September 30th, 2020, 7:46 am

I mentioned in another thread that my Mac currently has a habit of restarting itself, usually when its asleep. This is no great problem but I wondered if anyone could advise, from this report, what the problem might be.

Regards,

Leither.

The main thing that occurs to me looking at that lot is that the USB interface seems to be involved. So first question: do you have any external USB devices connected when this shutdown happens, or are any connected when you put the Mac to sleep? If so, could you try disconnecting them before sleep and see if the problem occurs -- assuming it is an easily reproducible problem (not intermittent).

A quick Google shows up numerous similar posts with Macs running Catalina when there are external devices connected. Seems to be an issue with power saving options.

Most fixes seem to be to disconnect any external devices, monitors or USB disks (which as GoSeigen stated is reported as the source of your restart/panic problems), or changing the Energy Saver options (not sure to what but possibly worth toggling some of them associated with your external devises especially if a USB disk.

With the numerous reported problems, one would hope this was a known issue and should be fixed in later versions of Catalina.

Thanks to both yet again, especially as it appears to be a known issue.

I've got two devices attached: an external back-up drive and a dvd drive. I'll disconnect the latter first to see what happens.

Leither.

If it isn't the USB/peripherals causing the issues maybe have a look at Virtualbox.

I've had problems related to VB when using on W10 in conjunction with sleep mode (no Mac experience).
Found articles and reports related to it but never really resolved it fully, I just stopped using sleep and used hibernate instead which was less problematic (but not completely problem free).

Another thing that can cause unwanted restarts from sleep is Wake On Lan triggers. Again I've experienced that on W10, had to go through various settings and turn off everywhere I could find it. If you need remote or scheduled wake for any reason (automated maintenance/backups et al) then it's probably best not to turn it off, but again I have no Mac experience there, only W10/PC.

Infrasonic, interesting you mention VirtualBox. I had to use it because of two Windows programs - MS Money (which I use daily) and a genealogy program which I use rarely.

It causes me no end of bother, largely because Money is a very old, no longer supported program with known problems but I (like many others) think it's still the best personal finance program ever. I'd love to get away from it and use something which was native to my Mac - I'm currently trying out MoneyDance which is proving to be a real pain trying to transfer data from MS Money.

However, going back to the problem of may Mac restarting, since I removed the attached dvd disk, I haven't had any problems of the Mac restarting, fingers crossed.

Quite bizarrely, since disconnecting the DVD disk from my Mac, not only has this sorted the problem of my Mac restarting itself, it's also sorted the problem which I reported on another thread of my emails periodically not downloading.

Ours is not to reason why .....

Thanks again,

Leither.

Strange, though it's possible when the USB crashes it affects something else in the process...

Just coming back to the DVD drive, is it a big loss to be without it? One thing you could try is to get an inexpensive external USB hub which might resolve the problem by adding an extra layer between the DVD and your Mac, i.e. it might just be a specific interaction between your Mac and this particular drive that causes the problem. You'd need to remind yourself not to plug it in directly once a bit of time has passed, of course!

Thanks GS. No it's not a great loss to have it unplugged, I'll just connect it when needed. The drive itself is actually an Apple drive and only a few months old so should be compatible.

Oh now that's very odd. It shouldn't be causing trouble -- can you return it as faulty for a refund or replacement?

Zap Your PRAM?

After you shut down your computer, turn on the computer and immediately press and hold the following keys on your keyboard simultaneously: "Option," "Command," "P" and "R." Release the keys after you hear two startup chimes. The system chimes once upon restart and then a second time upon PRAM reset. If you're using a Bluetooth keyboard, press and hold the keys as soon as you hear the first startup chime.

I always keep my Apple kit forever and then when the Gods stop supporting it, install Linux. So this this might be old advice, but zapping pram can sort out all kinds of niggles.

GS, thanks. I rarely used the DVD drive but I'll plug it in again & see what happens.

Formoverfunction - thanks but I'll leave that for now!
