Mystery Items No. 5
I have managed to find ten more items for you to identify. There are a couple of small items where the scale is only partly visible - this is the same 100mm scale used on the other photographs. All photos are mine.
1.
What are these for?
2.
What is this?
3.
What is this for?
4.
Specifically, what is this?
5.
This tape is 50mm wide, but what is it for?
6.
I have photoshopped out the name. What is it?
7.
This black tape has a specific purpose. The inside of the cardboard core has a brand name which I have photoshopped out. What is it for?
8.
You will almost certainly have used one but do you know what it is?
9.
Can you work out what this is?
10.
And, lastly, what is this?
Good luck!

There is actually some similarity, although it is not a pump and has nothing to do with bicycles or tyres.

7 looks like velcro tape, the sort I use to keep cables tidy.
Is 8 from a toilet roll holder?

Not velcro, you are on the right track though. Where might you see it used?
swill453 wrote:Is 8 from a toilet roll holder?
It looks similar but is much bigger.

I think I can have a stab at 2 and 3
2 a waterproof cable joining adaptor, I used to call them BT clips.
3 a de-burring tool

Jelly crimp that's it.
not a no spolier question then - and note to self check the colour.

Correct on both counts.
No. 2 is an 8A jelly crimp. It is an insulation displacement connector used for telephone and similar wires: You just cut the wires (don't strip them) and poke them in the holes, then push in the round bit on the top. You can get special pliers for this. They are filled with petroleum jelly to make them waterproof. 8B jelly crimps take three wires, and 8C jelly crimps allow you to tap into an existing wire without disconnecting it.
I use no. 3 for deburring copper pipe.

Re: Mystery Items No. 5
1: some sort of trim holding clips for a car ?
2: snotter crimp
3. deburring tool
4. car fuse 4 amp?
5. self adhesive reflective tape ?
6. USB conference call mic ?
7: braided cable sleeve/shrink ? (nah - looking at the big photo it's not a tube)
8. was convinced it was a sprung spindle for toilet roll - but from the size it's probably a chair piston?
9. ratchet from a blind
10. probe ? (temperature perhaps - can't imagine why there's only a bit of thread)
- sd

servodude wrote:1: some sort of trim holding clips for a car ?
Nothing automotive.
servodude wrote:2: snotter crimp
I have never heard them called that. They ooze jelly a bit from their nostrils when they are crimped so maybe it is a locally used term.
servodude wrote:4. car fuse 4 amp?
Not a fuse, and nothing automotive.
servodude wrote:5. self adhesive reflective tape ?
Not self-adhesive. It is a bit shiny but that is not part of its function.
servodude wrote:6. USB conference call mic ?
Not a microphone.
servodude wrote:7: braided cable sleeve/shrink ? (nah - looking at the big photo it's not a tube)
You are on the right track. I am looking for something more specific.
servodude wrote:8. was convinced it was a sprung spindle for toilet roll - but from the size it's probably a chair piston?
It is indeed a chair piston.
servodude wrote:9. ratchet from a blind
3/4 point for that. Can you be more specific?
servodude wrote:10. probe ? (temperature perhaps - can't imagine why there's only a bit of thread)
Not a probe. Not electrical.

Re: Mystery Items No. 5
1. no idea.... or is it tiny brackets for the inside of a cabinet?
2.
- i think it came from Scotchlok/Snotlock - 3M's brand for the handy things
4
- so an LED or LRD or you've hidden the bit that looks like a reed switch?
6.
- USB IR receiver for remote control then?
7.
- adhesive fabric tape for wrapping wires in a loom - dunno what it would be called
9.
- it inserts in to the roller of a roller bind and a ball chain goes through the plastic gear to the right as it is shown
10. no idea at all!
- sd

No 10 is a de-burring tool
Edit to add: No, it's No 3 that is the deburring tool!

Re: Mystery Items No. 5
Can I have a go at No.4, which I think is a Light Emitting Diode (LED)...
If that's correct, then the major clue for me was the two plastic domes on either side, which I think are designed to focus the LED light towards the viewer...
I'll also have a stab at No8, although I'm not too confident - is it a toilet cistern internal plunger device?
Thanks for compiling these Julian - very interesting stuff...
Cheers,
Itsallaguess

Re: Mystery Items No. 5
3. looks like friction tape. Which was used on cricket bat handles, ice hockey stick blades, and probably some other things you don't want to drop.
I believe it is from a slatted blind (either horizontal or vertical) rather than a roller blind. Rolling a blind takes considerable force, and the part does not look strong enough. Changing the angles of the slats takes relatively little force.
A square rod fits in the square hole and rotates as the string is pulled. Other gizmos on the rod rotate the slats.

Re: Mystery Items No. 5
I'm going to have a stab at No.1, as I think they might be some sort of spacers or clamps for PC motherboard components and given that there's four of them in the picture then they may even be CPU cooler clamps?

No. 10, looks like a long frame fixing, ie. plug with nail. But it looks rather long for that.
