Tesla’s head of energy operations has left the company amid an important growth phase for the ‘Tesla Energy’ division.

...Johnson first joined Tesla as the head of commercial energy before being promoted to lead overall energy operations last summer.

Colby Hastings replaced him as head of commercial energy operations.

Over the last few months, Electrek heard rumors that Johnson wasn’t at Tesla anymore, but we couldn’t confirm it until now.

Johnson has updated his LinkedIn profile to confirm that he left Tesla, and he is now working at a startup in stealth mode in the renewable energy and storage space.

Regards,

Slightly misleading headline?

China demand:
Sales in March 35,478
Sales in April 25,845
Sales in May 33,463

So sales have recovered, but still down 6% on March figure.

Soaring or diving? ;)

Obviously a lot of cars may have been exported?

Headline is perfectly accurate, so long as you have accepted that Tesla's China sales were 11k in April...

Direct from the source's source, don't see the point in reporting reports of reports...

Tesla, which makes its Model 3 sedans and Model Y sport-utility vehicles in Shanghai, exported 11,527 China-made vehicles in May.

- https://www.reuters.com/business/autos- ... 021-06-08/

So that leaves sales in China at 21,936, up significantly from 11,*** in April, but annualised at 263,232 nothing like the predictions the Teslarati's cheerleaders have been spinning for Chinese demand.

Meanwhile:

China's new electric vehicle sales surged 177% to 185,000 cars in May from a year earlier, CPCA said. Overall passenger vehicle sales, however, rose just 1.1% to 1.66 million cars.

- https://www.reuters.com/business/autos- ... 021-06-08/

So it's not a lack of demand for electric cars which is suppressing Tesla sales there. Is China the new Norway?

Is Musk still acting as Tesla's board's liability insurer? Turns out it can be quite an expensive service...

BERLIN (Reuters) - Volkswagen said on Wednesday it had agreed with former executives, including ex-CEO Martin Winterkorn, to settle claims related to the dieselgate scandal that will see the carmaker receive 288 million euros ($351 million) in compensation.

The settlement comes as Winterkorn was charged by Berlin prosecutors with giving false testimony to the German parliament when he said he was unaware of the carmaker’s diesel emissions cheating before it became public.

...The settlement, which consists mainly of a 270 million euro payment from directors’ and officers’ liability (D&O) insurances, also includes a settlement with former Audi boss Rupert Stadler.

1st episode of the Munro tear down of the Mach E.

Interestingly they found a big area of oil canning on the rear wing and the rear tail gate is about a small finger depth out of alignment.

Northvolt raises $2.75 billion

Northvolt raises $2.75 billion in equity to deploy further battery cell capacity – expands Swedish gigafactory to 60 GWh

Including the private placement, Northvolt has now raised more than $6.5 billion in equity and debt to enable an expansion plan leading up to and beyond 150 GWh of deployed annual production capacity in Europe by 2030. In addition, Northvolt has to date secured in excess of $27 billion worth of contracts from key customers, including BMW, Fluence, Scania and Volkswagen, to support its plan, which also includes establishing recycling capabilities to enable 50 percent of all its raw material requirements to be sourced from recycled batteries by 2030.

...Northvolt’s first gigafactory, Northvolt Ett, in Skellefteå, Sweden, will be expanded from the earlier plan of 40 GWh to 60 GWh of annual production capacity in order to meet the increased demand from key customers, including a $14 billion order from Volkswagen announced earlier this year. The factory will commence production later this year.

Tesla can't even do a livestream which is already a week late on time! Two hours late for a 40 minute talk. Musk thinks he's Madonna! Ventilated front seats people. Woo.

In good news for all:

Volkswagen expects chips shortage to ease in Q3

Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) expects a shortage in semiconductor supply to ease in the third quarter but sees the bottlenecks continuing in the long-term, a board member told Handelsblatt newspaper.

"At the moment we have reached the lowest point. We are facing the toughest six weeks," Murat Aksel, the head of procurement on the Volkswagen board, told the newspaper in an interview.

He said he expects around 10% shortage in chips over the long-term as building up production capacities takes up to two years.

The 29 minute Tesla Plaid delivery event:

https://youtu.be/kUmkbzQ-BS0

introduced the most remarkable production car ever made at a remarkably low price of circa $130k.

The car show cases big developments in their motors which are now held together with carbon sleeves designed to run up to 20,000 rpm (single gear from 0 to 200 mph) and give a 0-60 time of under 2 seconds with a range of around 400 miles and 187 miles of range of supercharger driving with 15 minute charge time. The new motor can be lifted by hand giving an extraordinary power to weight ratio: Something one can lift capable of moving 2 tones of car from zero to 60 mph in less than 2 seconds and remarkable power curve:

https://twitter.com/0_ody/status/140330 ... 59458?s=20

The heating and cooling system have been improved and are claimed to dramatically improve both the cold weather range (30% better) and high speed recovery.

The car has been designed to minimise injury in the event of a collision: Faster than any Porsche and safer than any Volvo.

New gaming system of capability better than most available gaming consoles at 60 frames per second for all current games.

New ability to pre-decide what the driver is likely to want to do allowing more seamless and easy driving, particularly on repeat routes such as driving to and from work.

New ventless cooling system, try-zone: driver and passenger front and rear.

Many more improvements and developments.

Without any doubt this sets Tesla as the premier automaker on the planet.

So what's the improvement in mean time to limp resulting from the cooling improvements? The original was pretty pitiful.

It doesn't do 0-60 in 1.99s and the 200mph wheel pack isn't available...

Strange that there were no previews/endorsements available before people handed over their money...

And Electrek agree with surveys like "Which" that a Model S range is much lower in colder climates. Commenting on Musk's claim they write:

"The comment was criticized for not accounting for the fact that a 400-mile range is closer to 250-300 miles in colder climates and depending on the conditions."

The new thermal system with heat pump is supposed to increase the cold weather range by 30%.

It is not clear to me if this is going into all cars, or just the Plaid, but likely Plaid first then into other cars later.
