To you petrolheads
I have a very nice vehicle, a Q5 2016 which I have now decided to replace. I spent a couple of hours with the salesman from my local Audi garage this morning and we decided on the replacement, delivery Jan 2022. Great idea or what? (Chips are in very short supply) After five years or so I find that things begin to go wrong and I like a nice new vehicle anyway. I was offered a six months old vehicle and it was everything I was looking for. Why did I not say there and then I will have it. I do not know. Psychology or what?
I think it is because some years ago I changed a 6 cylinder 2.5 litre I think Audi A6 (petrol), the most wonderful car I have ever owned, into a bog standard Audi A6 diesel

Re: To you petrolheads
The psychology would work the other way for me. Joining a waiting list to me smacks of desperation. Being able to buy an as-new car, with a few miles on the clock, right now at a large discount from the new price is a no brainer.

If things begin to go wrong after 5 years, it might mean you're buying the wrong company's cars.

You sound like the car industry’s ideal customer.
As I like buying 3-5 year old cars which have done most of their depreciating and are barely run in, I am grateful for those like you!

spot on.
generally , japanese brands , honda , toyota , mazda , suzuki come out top of reliability surveys.
peugot, vauxhall , citroen , seat , renault ( all part of the same group now i believe ) come out near the bottom .
japanese nissan and mitsubischi have formed alliances with renault , which rules them out for me .

We only buy Honda.
(Typically between 7 - 10 years old).
Matt
EDIT: In fact my Honda AeroDeck Petrol estate (1999) is now a whisker off 200k on the clock. A bit of rust now, but basically a superb vehicle. It won't even notice if you did 95 mph in it all day long!

Re: To you petrolheads
But to many of us our choice of car(s) is more than trying to save money, how long it lasts or how many miles we can put on it.
For some of us a budget is not so important. The price we pay is less of an issue than the type of car or its performance potential.
Personally I wouldn't be seen dead in a Honda. I cant think of any Japanese car that I have ever wanted to own. But we are all different and you have the perfect right to buy any car that takes your fancy.

Without wishing to be rude or disrespectful here, you sometimes comment you are getting on a bit and that your investment pot is worth as much or more than it's ever been. Despite living off it's generated income, which is a great achievement.
If you fancy blowing a chunk of YOUR money on a new car, just go and darn well do it. Who cares a toss what anyone else thinks or does? Just go and buy the bl**dy Audi and enjoy it. One day it'll be too late, so just go and do it.
RVF
Thanks RVF. You are not in the least disrespectful. These are pretty well my sentiments! I am not good a spending money on what sometimes seems frivolities such as a new car. My weakness i think, although I really do not mind spending lots of money on say travelling but I am not able to do that at the moment so..........

You are right RVF. This is an investment site and hopefully contributors will be pleased that others on the site have made successes of their investment strategies and can afford a new car.
Those of us who lease new cars are very pleased that consumers who buy nearly new cars drive up second hand values thus reducing the leasing cost of a brand new car.
In my experience, when purchasing new cars, if one wasn’t in a hurry, it was always possible to get exactly the spec required at a substantial discount from the new price. On a couple of occasions, at the end of a quarter, I was given a discount over 17% so ironically the new car cost around the same as a similar year-old model which had done 10,000 miles.
Incidentally, Dod, you say that your favourite car was an Audi A6. I see that you could lease an Audi A6 Saloon 40 TFSI Sport 4dr S Tronic [Tech Pack] over four years at 5k miles a year for £275 a month with an initial payment of £1,650. Total cost of the lease is under £15,000. That looks a competitive package to me. Obviously you’d have to pay a little more for extras like metallic paint etc or to upgrade to a higher spec model. And for peace of mind a maintenance and tyre replacement package would probably add about £20 a month. See link below

Re: To you petrolheads
Thanks Howard. I am not sure but I may possibly lease in the end although I tend to do something more than 10,000 miles a year (in a normal year anyway) but I was surprised at the price offered as a trade in of my current car. In fact, the price keeps increasing because of the shortage of new cars.

Am I right to think that at the end of four years they repossess the car and charge for mileage over 20,000?

Yes, the cost quoted was for that mileage, if you look at the link provided, you can vary the annual mileage and obviously the costs are higher for, say 40,000 miles in total. Looking at Leasing.com suggests it would be £313 per month for that mileage.

Re: To you petrolheads
I owned an Audi Q3 - a slightly smaller version of the Q5. Whilst being the most comfortable car I have ever owned it also turned out to be the most troublesome but luckily most of the issues arose within the 3 year warranty period. Despite this I wish I had bought another as my replacement vehicle - a BMW X2 isn't a patch on the Audi. I must admit I would be very tempted to buy the six month old Q5 on offer as long as the price was acceptable and that it had the optional extras I required. The problem I found with buying second hand Audis (as with BMWs) is that there are so many options it is difficult to find one with the exact spec I want so buying new could be the best course of action.
Don't be concerned with some of the comments indicating that buying new is a waste of money; it's your cash and you should spend it on what you like.

Rental and lease costs would include an allowance for depreciation. What you may be doing with car leasing is passing the depreciation risk to the finance Company. Against that they may be charging you over the odds for the risk and associated borrowing to finance the lease.

Not a weakness, I suspect the size of your savings pot and your spending habits are not unrelated.

Now there's an idea. I'm pretty sure MrsF doesn't appreciate me[1], particularly if I mention her SEAT

Re: To you petrolheads
Just to complete this story. I have settled on the 6 month old Q5 I first mentioned. I saw the guy again and the salesman said that he thought he would leave it a few days before returning it to his used car pool because it seemed pretty much what I was looking for. It is actually an S lIne that is one model up from what I would have bought new and has everything and more that I could ever need. And it has saved me a few thousand pounds. Can't be bad. A bit like BNC mentioned, it was registered new as an Audi corporate vehicle and has about 4,000 on the clock. Scarcely run in.
