Re: A diary of a well busted leg.
Wow Snorvey
just came across this post for the first time
it was painful just reading it
I am a fan of the NHS after having a triple bypass a couple of years ago
but a recommendation seems slighly odd request
hope you're all mended now
cheers

Re: A diary of a well busted leg.
a fascinating account @Snorvey
I remember my anaesthetist, now remember I wasn't pain, but the thought of triple bypass surgery where they slice you open and cut through your ribs, can have you wondering if you will see the next day, but Jamie "the sleep merchant" was busy cracking jokes and hoped I was in the building trade as he had some tricky jobs at home to do (WTF - I might not wake up and you want me for DIY!)
My venture does not compete with yours for pain and boy those pictures are graphic
When was this - are you over it now?
can you hop on the bad leg?

I thought it was Catch Phrase when I saw the photographs.
I thought "Iron Man" but then I saw the bicycle chain and realised it was Chain Man - look I've had a long day and can't think of anything better
Did you get a servicing kit and grease gun Snorvey?

Snorvey, do you find yourself irresistably drawn to magnets?
Fascinating stuff and the pictures are amazing. I hope you are well on the way to a full recovery.

Amusing.... but probably not
I have sternal wires round my rib cage and a friend of mine has a plate in his head after a serious car crash and neither of us have been pulled towards anything like that... though it would be quite funny I guess
They don't even trigger alarms at airport security....

Boring fact. As noted, the reason they use titanium in surgical implants is that it doesn't do magnetism. Otherwise an MRI scanner would go into hyperdrive every time they put you into it, and you'd emerge with your leg nicely microwaved. (Well, either that or else the machine would shake you to pieces before blowing all its fuses at once.)
I had a non-titanium clip up my proverbial marshmallows a couple of years ago, and it outstayed its welcome by several weeks, and the hospital couldn't MRI me until the damn thing had lost its grip and passed the way of all things. It was somewhat annoying, but as a topic of conversation it broke the ice at parties.

Re: A diary of a well busted leg.
Glad to hear that you're almost mended
A great post and plenty of vey good keep fit bits of kit - might get some myself help to balance and boost general muscle tone
I am lucky, no aches pains or anything else wrong with me, but better to stave if off now before any of that old age cr*p sets in in 10 or 20 years time !
Walking briskly is underated, 2 weeks after my bypass operation I was fu*ked walking up the slightest hill
I had a 5 week recovery period staying with my brother in Durham (which is one very hilly city!)
Sister in law (senior nurse) was star and mapped me out routes to go on of increasing difficulty and lo and behold
simply brisks walking pushing yourself a bit further each day got the ol' ticker back to normal - I was amazed

Re: A diary of a well busted leg.
Snorvey broke his leg,
Severely,
Silly sod,
Went ass over tit
And splintered his peg
Now he limps,
And services his steel,
With grease and oil
How must he feel
Bionic
He can’t run
Taken to hop
He’s writing a book
Take a look
Tonic
Snorvey’s got a trampoline
He bounces
And the NHS announces
The other legs broken
So just as a token
Ice cream and morphine

Re: A diary of a well busted leg.
Your problems were far far worse than my recovery from a mere hip replacement (in fact two in 4/5 years) but it is the same problem. Getting your muscles back in good working order. The hip replacement recovery was easy, just very gentle walking and then more and more less gentle exercise each time. I can vouch for the benefits of brisk walking.
That is though quite a story and I was out walking for most of the ice bound January as well although I kept pretty much to roads and relatively soft snow. I am terrified of doing something similar. The story is instructive on so many levels.
Thanks Snorvey and I hope that things continue to improve. They told me with my hip that I would see improvement for about 3/4 months after the op. What is your recovery period likely to be?

Snorvey wrote:12 to 18 months to a full recovery Dod. It all depends on age, lifestyle and how well you do what your told*. I'm aiming for the former.
As I said earlier, it's a around 80%, which means it's perfectly fine most of the time. I need more flexibility, endurance and strength in that order.
*the surgeon told me doing too much too soon can really set the healing back. Not to mention moving the metal work. Athlete types can be harder to fix than couch potatoes in some respects.
* the physio told me that she often sends folk away with instructions for the next 4 weeks knowing full welll they ain't going to do it, but if someone asks them, they are 'getting physio'. I don't think she's bothered. More money for her I guess.
I guess, with no experience whatsoever, that finding a good physio with experience of working with this sort of thing must be the key and then follow her instructions, but that is a long recovery period! As I said good luck and it is still early days at that rate.

I think Dod & Snorvey are the reason why barn dances are still popular
I know I'm Yorkshire the terrible
