Looking at the SMMT registration figures for 2021, Tesla had a market share of around 2%. That's not bad, but it is still a small player in the UK. It was helped by the restricted supply of competitors' cars. However premium brands seem to have taken advantage of the situation to improve their margins significantly.

I am seeing a few more Teslas on the road these days. I have two acquaintances with Model 3s and they both have had problems with their cars. One had his in the service centre for weeks and the other has had two breakdowns in a year. One failure to start before an important journey which needed help from the service team and a severe delay and the other solved over the phone/internet in an hour or two. Small sample, but in comparison my three and half year old car, like it's ICE predecessors has only had to visit a garage for one pre-planned service and an MOT so far.

It would irritate me to have an expensive Tesla which was unreliable. But, with the UK government subsidies for BEVs like Teslas I can see their attraction for company car users.

Tesla equity is at an interesting possible cross roads.

After the excellent production numbers the stock shot up, but then gave all of that back and more.

The Tesla annual report is due on the 26th, the same day Powell also speaks on tapering and such.

Looking at the forces at play here:

Tesla is dominant in the BEV world and hurting legacy.

Tesla equity has been strong until recently, reflecting the power of the business.

Are we at a point where the good news is already in the price and a correction likely?

Meanwhile inflation is causing all manner of prices to rise which tends to favour equities over other value stores especially with low interest rates, although they may not remain as low if Powell says he will raise them.

One can imagine a scenario, not unlike 2001, where equities get smacked and then make a big recovery over several years.

Alternatively if Powell isn't aggressive and people fear inflation that correction may not happen.

To add to the mix there is the possibility that Tesla FSD continues its recent improvement and suddenly becomes better than human drivers. If this happens one can expect the share price to take off, ditto if they demonstrate a bot that is worth owning at the price they want.

Imho the Tesla business is the strongest it has ever been and it seems likely to get stronger, but the equity is not the business.

And BMW didn't do too badly on the volume front with sales volumes at an all-time high.

"The BMW Group posted solid year-on-year sales growth of 8.4 percent last year, with a total of 2,521,525 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles delivered to customers worldwide. BMW sales reached a new all-time high of 2,213,795 units (+9.1%) last year, with the brand leading the global premium segment."

We will have to wait for the financial results to see whether their profits increased. They certainly appear to have been able to sell higher volumes of premium cars at higher prices in 2021.

BMW are gradually increasing sales of BEVs with a model in every range from Minis to Rolls Royce planned for launch relatively soon.

"Sales of fully-electric vehicles more than doubled to 103,855 units."

"One in four vehicles of the BMW Group sold in Germany is electrified."

Talking with various business regarding the Manchester clean air area:

that is scheduled to be introduced at the end of May this year there is a feeling that this will soon be applied to private cars and in the meantime all the owners of industrial vehicles in the area are selling off what ever won't pass the emissions requirement and this seems to be a lot of vehicles. All of these vehicles being put on the market with the knowledge that they will soon be charged for entry into a large area around Manchester is unlikely to make their price rise, more likely the opposite.

If this is applied to private cars it seems, but I have no absolute reference, that any diesel car which does not use adblue will be punished with daily access charges of circa £10. If this is correct then the second hand value of such cars is likely going to fall and at the same time the scarcity of cleaner vehicles will likely push prices up.

There are as usual many caveats. The government may decide to postpone, possibly by backbencher revolts, this scheme to get votes for the May elections which opinion polls show will hurt them. Or there may just not be enough vehicles to satisfy demand causing operators to put up all their prices causing inflation to jump leading to calls for the scheme to be postponed.

What ever happens any business that can provide electric goods vehicles in volume looks set to do well, but I am not convinced there are many such business and in the mean time the scramble for batteries ought to ramp up prices and soak up all the new oncoming supply and be a blessing for battery makers.

Interesting rapid rise in the equity of Toyota. They are set to announce a new BEV:

mid year and this move may be in anticipation of launch. If any legacy auto is going to get serious about making a lot of BEV it is likely Toyota whereas VW are falling behind their schedule which was 6-8% BEV and they managed shy of 5%, still better than other European makers like BMW, Mercedes et al.

Throughout development of the Plan, the 10 Greater Manchester local authorities have worked to understand and address the economic consequences of the national plan for businesses that operate locally. It is clear the path to compliance with the legal direction and to cleaner air is dependent on the ability of those owning the most polluting non-compliant vehicles to upgrade to cleaner vehicles. The Plan includes £120m of government funding to support those with non-compliant vehicles to upgrade their vehicle, with a mechanism to review funding arrangements if demand is predicted to outstrip our current budget.

Since the current plan was agreed in July 2021, emerging evidence from businesses and trade has highlighted significant challenges related to supply chain issues and inflation. Based on this evidence, there is a fundamental concern that these global and national factors may impact on the ability of local businesses and individuals to upgrade their vehicles and whether the current financial support package agreed with government – including nearly £100m of funds due to open at the end of January for light goods vehicles, minibuses, coaches and taxis and private hire vehicles – is sufficient.

The Greater Manchester Air Quality Administration Committee will meet on 20th January to consider the outcome of this work and what its implications means for the Greater Manchester Clean Air Plan and will confirm that the terms of the legal direction that Greater Manchester authorities are subject to states that authorities: “must not vary, revoke or suspend their implementation of the local plan for NO2 compliance … without the prior written consent of the Secretary of State.”

The Committee will therefore be recommended to seek approval from the Secretary of State requesting to pause opening of phase two Clean Air Funds at the end of January 2022, to enable an urgent and fundamental joint policy review with government to identify how a revised policy can be agreed to deal with the supply issues and local businesses’ ability to comply with the Greater Manchester Clean Air Plan. The Committee will also be asked to confirm that preparations to launch the first phase of the Clean Air Zone charging from May 2022 – buses, HGVs and non-Greater Manchester taxi and private hire vehicles - will continue.

The father of a local property developer told me that his son is trying to get compliant but can't get delivery of compliant vehicles for 2 years and is now having to try and buy second hand vehicles but is finding these are very hard to come by and expensive.

This may be part of the concerns.

A full page advertisement in Sunday’s New York Times took aim at Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” software, calling it “the worst software ever sold by a Fortune 500 company” and offering $10,000, the same price as the software itself to the first person who could name “another commercial product from a Fortune 500 company that has a critical malfunction every 8 minutes.”

The ad was taken out by The Dawn Project, a recently founded organization aiming to ban unsafe software from safety critical systems that can be targeted by military-style hackers, as part of a campaign to remove Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) from public roads until it has “1,000 times fewer critical malfunctions.”
