Barstewards each and everyone of them. Grandson's smallholding broken into on Friday night and tools and all sorts pinched. Several of his neighbours are in the same boat. CCTV shows same group of people responsible. Unfortunately he hadn't explained how much his feelings were hurt and how upset he was so the police didn't bother coming out.

I'm not sure how it can be done or what the costs may be but I'm reasonably sure your grandson can bring a civil action against the perpetrators if he can identify them on CCTV committing the crime.

Round our way the thieves are bold as brass breaking into farms and garages before it's even dark.
Farm down the lane, they've been three times, and last time cut through his security gate.
The police seem reluctant to go after them, even though it's generally known or maybe assumed, that it's the local gippos.

Given that the letters g and h are next to each other on the keyboard, I take it that he lives in Zimbabwe or similar and meant 'hippos'.

Either that or he's talking about our Romany friends, 'gyppos'.

Oh and there I was thinking it was greed and a lack of moral compass!

I have some sympathy with Tony Martin

In five years it will be the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the mantrap.
A mistake.

Wonder of wonders a member of Her Majesty's Constabulary turned up today. Unfortunately he was there to check grandson's firearms certificate. Mind you his opinion of what he'd like to do to said "travellers" made me realise just how the police as well as the public have to bow to these people who refuse to acknowledge any responsibilities but are always bleating on about their "rights".
We have a couple of mantraps hanging on the wall I believe that with a little splash of WD40 ............

Nope. WD40 will dissolve 200 year-old rust and free the jaws for further pain, but it is not a lubricant.
However, if you catch malefactors sufficiently often, the regular fresh blood will stiffen their sinews, summon up their blood and disguise your fair nature with hard-favoured rage...

Myth: WD-40 Multi-Use Product is not really a lubricant.

Fact: While the “W-D” in WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, WD-40 Multi-Use Product is a unique, special blend of lubricants. The product’s formulation also contains anti-corrosion agents and ingredients for penetration, water displacement and soil removal.

Some trivia.
In the NASA space programme, they were trying out a whole number of recipes for a water dispersant.
a) Mix number 40 was the best performing. WD40 was the product development code. (No idea how it became the brand as well)
b) The primary ingredient in WD40 is fish oil

More trivia. The first commercial use of WD-40 was for the Atlas missile to prevent corrosion. The missile's body consisted of a pressurised tank made of very thin steel which would collapse without pressure, as one or two did:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imkdz63agHY

Since they were originally not capable of flying from the US to the USSR some were stationed in the UK (and removed after the Cuban missile crisis). Therefore rust prevention was quite essential.

Sure I read that it is an urban myth that it contains fish oil.

EDIT: Looks like a myth.

Straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak...
