My 15 reg car has a built in sat nav. It also will bluetooth to a mobile ohone should it be with me allowing hands free calls on the car speaker. The sat nav is also aware of traffic congestion on or near the route that has been set. Presumably it's doing this by hijacking the phone's data connection. What it doesn't seem to do is update its map. If you come across a new flyover replacing a roundabout, you still get told to "take the second exit" etc. Am I correct?
I've seen suggestions that a newer development is that Google maps can project its navigation display on the car's screen.

Re: Built in satnav
The satnav in our 2016 Avensis has live traffic info (after a fashion) and no date connection that we're paying for. It even occasionally blurts out "Speed camera ahead", usually about 10 metres before you reach the van.
And as I don't have a smartphone I'm pretty sure it isn't using my data

Re: Built in satnav
Depends on the car model I think. Mine (BMW) has a system called RTTI (real time traffic information) which is updated independently of whether I’m carrying my phone. Ford have a similar system and doubtless others do too. Lots of cars have a built-in restricted data service so that they can (for instance) also alert automatically in the event of an accident, communicate with an app on a smart device etc.. I believe that some older systems were dependent on access to a separate data service though.

Bit of a side-step here, but I think worth knowing if people aren’t already aware, of the amount of info your car might be “sharing” about you
