Who called me...
Who called me…
On a mobile?
I had got used to finding who called me on my landline but I have terminated the landline.
Now I’m getting calls from mobile numbers – to my mobile - that I don’t recognise and I can’t identify them. (I don’t answer them)
DAK if there is a way to identify these numbers?
It seems that cold callers were given dedicated land line numbers - now they are given mobiles and these are not easily identified.
Will this new procedure cause the mobile to be as mistrusted as the landline and calls ignored for the sake of security.
The benefit to the populace – of an inexpensive means of comms – will be lost to the cult of sales promotions and market research. Another self-inflicted damage.

My mobile gets marketing calls from my energy supplier, apparently the only company I have given those details to. Sometimes I get a text from the opticians.

Re: Who called me...
We have a new BT phone when we changed to Digital voice. Somehow this interprets many calls from mobile numbers as "Nuisance". I assume that most of these are coming from a source other than the indicated number by spoofing.
I think that they have been 100% correct in their diagnosed, but what their method is, I know not.

Hi Gerry557,
I tried that - honest
It can't identify. I'm guessing that would be because its a mobile number...

I phoned them.
I am now a millionaire. That's what they told me anyway.
Seriously, I did call them. It cut off immediately
They're probably wondering what the ringing noise was. Fack....I think someone just actually called us.

A lot of the mobile calls we've had since going Digital voice the other week have been marked as "nuisance?" None of them have been.

I installed Mr Number (downloaded FREE from the PlayStore on Android) and this seems pretty good at identifying scammers and then allowing you to block their call. I've been using for several years - never had to buy any add-ons!

Re: Who called me...
Only my friends & banks have my mobile number (total less than 10).
I occasionally get calls/texts from unknown numbers.
I can only assume that they are scam calls.
You can add them to your blocker but from what I have observed the numbers keep changing.
It is a tiresome process.
I only have my phone when shopping or exercising - I never actually answer it immediately - I just check later.
I believe that Ofgem is in the process of requiring the telecom companies to block these false number calls.

I have had a few spam texts recently - fairly unusual for me. My text system usually flags them as suspicious and I can block them directly from the app, I think it is worth doing.

Re: Who called me...
My phone, a Samsung, has a setting enabled that allows incoming calls to be checked with the 'Hiya' service; there's no charge for this.
If the caller's number is on Hiya's list, the screen will change to a red background, with the words 'suspected spam' displayed. I then know not to answer the call.

I have a simple policy of simply not answering if I don't know the number. If it's important, there's nothing to stop them sending me an SMS or Whatsapp message.
What really annoyed me a few years ago was the increasing use of recorded messages. I considered that the height of rudeness.
Since doing this, I definitely receive far fewer calls. I guess they just give up.

Similar to my wife and I. Both of our mobiles are set to send any number not on our contact list straight to voicemail and we check the voicemails when we have the inclination. Both of us still get 1 or 2 random number calls a day which usually end up leaving Chinese sounding voicemails.
Annoyingly I’ve found recently that hospital and surgery staff more and more use personal mobiles to make contact and these too get diverted. As a result we’ve missed the occasional important call but that’s really no different to them ringing the landline when no one is at home, but it’s still irritating. I’m sure the technology is there to limit this nuisance but I suppose there’s little in it to encourage the operators to bother.

In my experience, medical staff usually send an SMS text, either with info or to please call them.
To be honest, I can't remember the last time we answered the landline or in fact, anyone asked for our landline number. Everyone has our mobile numbers and email addresses. Sadly, I could never be bothered to learn how to use the recorded messages thingy on our landlines, so I may have missed a few important messages from various world leaders to please come and take over, but I don't worry about it.
Steve
PS All this is because our kids are big now. When they were little, I would never dream of ignoring a call. Usually a teacher asking if we knew a good Child Psychiatrist.

I agree and do what you do.
The problems though are that my GP surgery, despite me telling them I do not answer number withheld calls, continues to call me as number withheld. And they dont leave VMs or follow up.
So sometimes I have to gamble and answer in case its them.
