Ring Video Doorbell

#559618

Postby Nemo » January 6th, 2023, 1:33 pm

We are looking to have one of these. Our existing (traditional) bell is wired but I wonder if I could power a video doorbell with this wiring. The ads for these aren't too clear. I've spoken with someone who has a battery powered one and the battery seems to last quite a while so I could consider one of these.

I'm also baffled by the price range of these. Anything from £40 to £200 plus.

Any recommendation please? I want video, wifi, two way talk and anything else that can be bolted on!

Thanks

Hi, we got the wired ring doorbell £50 from Amazon, but also needed a transformer as our existing wiring wasn't compatible, and paid an electrician £80 to fit. A good DIY person can do yourself but I'm not messing with electrics.

I've since got a Ring chime, and a battery security camera.

You have to pay to record and store video, get 30 days for free then cost £3.49 per month. As I've got the security camera as well I pay two lots.

They're great, strongly recommend!

Hi Adamski

Thanks for that.

Do I need a cloud account though? I'm looking at a video bell with a micro sd card so I wondered if it was necessary.

I have Eufy which all works fine and has no ongoing charges. I have both the doorbell and an additional camera. If someone rings the doorbell I can talk to them on my phone from anywhere.

Both the doorbell and camera have automatic motion sensitive video recording.

All excellent

Ps I have both on battery not wired, which is fine. I just have to plug it onto a charger every few months

Thanks ScrumpyJack

I've check out the Eufy and they look OK. I'll have a look on YouTube to see how they work.

I have a battery powered Ring video doorbell. Big mistake. I am too lazy to take the battery out every week or to two to charge it. It now has a post-it note on it saying "please knock".

I recall Ring did a model that derived its power from the wiring of an existing push-button doorbell. Wish I'd bought that.

I remember being rather shocked when I found a month after installation that the functionality I had been sold, and that I thought would be part of the expensive outlay, was only to continue for a monthly fee. At the time I felt a tad miss-sold and almost held-to-ransom.

On Friday I fitted for a client a (battery operated  ) ReoLink wireless doorbell that could optionally use the existing wires, but I think it used them only to ring the existing chime instead of (or maybe as well as) its own chime.

The Eufy batteries certainly last several months before needing a recharge and there is no monthly fee.
