Yes / No / Maybe Later

#19932

Postby wheypat » January 4th, 2017, 12:20 pm

Am I alone in that when presented with what used to be a binary choice I am now frequently presented with an alternative

Would you like to import your contacts from other devices? Choices for answer are Yes & Maybe Later
Would you like to make Edge your default browser? Yes / Maybe Later
Add your mobile number to facebook? Yes / Perhaps Later

The answer to all of these id NO. That's NO, as in NEVER. Death's too good for them . . . .

Death's too good for your contacts? I must get to know you!

Seriously though, I expect the reason for that is to try and help users who agonised over that question wondering whether a "no" might be final, and wanting confirmation that "later" was indeed an option.

I once left a job and in my leaving speech I came out with "I just want you all to know, that over the last 4 years I have come to think of you as . . . people I met . . . . .

Yes, I lifted the line from Red Dwarf. No, none of them had ever seen it.

Yes, I've had all those things. Edge, Garmin, Skype, Internet Explorer and that bloody Cortana woman, all pestering me to show how much I love them by "updating my preferences". Having shouted at them uselessly that my preference was for them all to feck off, I discovered that I could shut some of them up by opening Task Manager and striking them off my start-up list.

Mind you, Skype had the last laugh on me. Having been unable to remind me that I hadn't made a Skype call in six months (because I'd switched it off), it snaffled my remaining credit balance and disappeared into the ether with it.
