Slow Sky broadband

#12453

Postby AleisterCrowley » December 6th, 2016, 12:15 pm

I've got basic bog-standard ADSL broadband from Sky
Until recently I've been getting an adequate 5-6Mbps. This has now dropped to a consistent 2.5Mbps - based on Ookla speedtest at various times over the past week.
I've phoned Sky and they said 'about 3Mbps' is typical for my area, and the previous higher speed may have been due to a line fault. So they can't do anything.
Does this sound possible/reasonable?
I haven't changed the setup at all, and have rebooted the router several times.

The problem you have is that sky will likely resist referring this to opernreach as they can get billed by openreach if no fault is found. I suspect you will have to get a little insistent with sky to get the matter reported out as a fault.

I assume "fibre" is not available in your area? This would likely be vastly better.

what packages are available from BT? https://www.productsandservices.bt.com/ ... -packages/

Anything available from virgin? http://www.virginmedia.com/shop/broadba ... -only.html

Fibre is available, but I am (I was) happy with basic ADSL @ >5Mbps
2.5Mbps is at the lower limit of useabilty

the previous higher speed may have been due to a line fault

Rubbish!

Line faults cause reductions not increases

You need to get onto the next tier broadband support.

What is your line attenuation?

I am on Sky.
My line is 62.5 dB and I'm getting just under 3.5Mbps.

I did query how a fault would increase speed - she said Openreach may have 'reconfigured' the line or something...
Sounds like b/s to me (as an ex BT Mobile employee)

How is your test device connected to the router. Is it cabled or is it wi-fi.
I have seen falling broadband speeds on my wi-fi connected laptop but not on my hard-wired desktop.
As the laptop is 6 feet from the router it is not a distance issue.
I changed channel on the wi-fi and disabled BT's auto-optimize (or whatever) and all is fine.
In short the broadband speed was good but the wi-fi speed wasn't.

OK sorry...seen it now....

Connection Speed 3071 kbps 488 kbps

It's worth rebooting your router to see if you get a better connection. You may need to do this a few times.

I used to get this problem with Plusnet, and a reboot often seemed to fine a new 'route' which was better. A soft boot to renew IP alone didn't make any difference.

I recently changed to Sky, and my current downstream is 5947kbps, and also seems much more solid. I did have a few dropped connections last month [usually overnight], but speed has gone up slightly, so I'm not complaining.

I also find the Sky router quite good, despite it being too light to hang 4 network cables out the back without it wanting slew off the shelf!
Speed is also marginally better, compared to my Netgear DGND3700 router.

It's been Ok until recently - solid 5Mbps and reliable. I've rebooted about ten times today. And tried removing the faceplate and going in to the test socket (shouldn't make a difference as I've only got the microfilter connected)

As I haven't changed anything, I suspect OpenReach have done some 'work' somewhere....

Should be fine for your 5Mbps.

Rather than during the day, try a restart/reboot in the early hours of the morning via switching off the router mains feed and then waiting several minutes before switching it on.

My noise margin is 2.9 dB 7.7 dB and is pretty solid. 1.9dB is the probable cause of your intermittent connection.

When I had a line-related issue, one of the tech-team contacted me but I did have to first go through all the Sky check-sheet such as connect direct to the master socket etc with the general help desk on the phone.

Openreach Local Network Status Checker might be worth a look.

For the record my stats are currently...

Code: Select all

Broadband Link      Downstream      Upstream
Connection Speed    5947 kbps       797 kbps
Line Attenuation    52.5 dB         33.6 dB
Noise Margin         5.0 dB         11.11 dB

Upstream looking a bit slow, though.

Code: Select all

Broadband Link   Downstream   Upstream
Connection Speed   2839 kbps   139 kbps
Line Attenuation   49.0 dB   31.5 dB
Noise Margin   3.9 dB   7.7 dB

After multiple reboots, off at mains, wobble leads, disconnect/reconnect cables/swap microfilter, it's stabilised as above.

I want my 5.5Mbps-down/1Mbps-up back !

(openreach checker says no local problems, thanks for link)

Have you tried the BT site where you enter your phone number and they give a guesstimate of what service they could offer ?

I'm 0.66km from the exchange as the crow flies, I can see it from my window.
Even allowing for cable routes i'd expect the run to be <1km
Sky reckon 4-6Mbps from memory
